The Congress is yet to announce its candidate for the high-stakes contest for the Amethi Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh on May 20. Senior leader Rahul Gandhi kept up the suspense during a press conference today and was non-committal when asked about who will the party field against BJP’s Smriti Irani. When asked whether he will contest the elections from Amethi or Raebareli Rahul Gandhi said, “This is a BJP question and lauded the reporter for asking the question, but replied that the party will decide from where he will contest the elections from”.

Rahul Gandhi has already filed his nomination paper from Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency from where he is a sitting MP. In the 2019 parliamentary election Raebareli was the only seat that the Congress party won and that too with a reduced margin. In 2014 Sonia Gandhi won the seat by a margin of more than 3.5 lakhs that got reduced to little over 1.6 lakhs in 2019 election.
