Some time ago, the BJP criticized the Congress, saying that the Indian island of Kachchatheevu was given to Sri Lanka by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The debate hasn’t settled yet, and there’s a fresh controversy brewing. It’s being suggested that the picturesque Coco Islands group was handed over to Myanmar by former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
Vishnu Pad Ray, the BJP candidate from Andaman and Nicobar asserted that Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had allegedly transferred the Coco Islands from the Andaman and Nicobar to Myanmar. These islands are now directly under China’s control. During a conversation with a news agency, Ray alleged that the Congress never paid attention to the issue in the past 70 years. Today the Central Govt is constructing a shipyard and two defence airbases in the Campbell Bell area to counter China.
Did PM Nehru really gift the Island. ? There are different views on this. During the British rule, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands were under English governance as part of British India. They gained independence along with the country in 1947. It is believed that the British handed over the Coco Islands group to Myanmar (then Burma). Burma was also a part of the British Empire at that time.
Another Version According to this, in the 19th century, the British government chose the Andaman Islands as a punishment for Indian revolutionaries. Food for the prisoners and other staff living here used to come from Coco Island. Reportedly, to avoid the hassle of growing grains and vegetables, the British purportedly leased this island to an influential family in Burma. In 1882, it was leased for a period of 99 years and thereafter it was officially considered a part of Burma, which is now known as Myanmar.
