Kartik Aryan Shines In “Chandu Champion”

Chandu Champion is Kartik Aryan’s best performance till date.

Chandu Champion has finally hit the theatres this Friday. This movie is based on the life of India’s first Paralympics gold medallist Murlikant Petkar. Kartik has totally transformed himself for this role and he is ably supported by Vijay Raaz, Bhuvan Arora, Rajpal Yadav, Yashpal Sharma and Aniruddh Dave.

Kabir Khan’s latest film, Chandu Champion, his second sports movie after 83, masterfully combines intense emotions, high drama, stirring music, dynamic athletic action, and light-hearted comedy to bring a remarkably eventful life story to the screen.

Murlikant Petkar’s life was full of extraordinary twists and turns, far beyond what most people experience. His accomplishments as a young man were truly remarkable. Does the film do justice to his story? For the most part, yes, it does.

Murlikant’s journey from a small village in Maharashtra’s Sangli district to the swimming pool at the 1972 Summer Paralympics in Heidelberg, with a stop at the boxing ring during the 1964 International Military Games in Tokyo, is an inspiring story of grit, determination, and unwavering self-belief.

The film might have been more effective if it had toned down the melodrama and aimed for a bit more realism. The depiction of the young wrestler from Islampur and his interactions with friends, family, and mentors often feel overly emotional, which sometimes detracts from the story.

Chandu Champion is fast-paced and enjoyable, diving straight into the action. Reflecting the dynamic life it portrays, the film never slows down. The lead actor’s energetic performance keeps the story fresh and avoids the usual clichés of underdog dramas.

The film’s rhythm mirrors the unpredictable flow of Murlikant’s life, jumping from one experience to another as he faces and overcomes various challenges. This journey ultimately leads to the remarkable achievement that cemented his place in the record books.
In the opening moments of Chandu Champion, an older and somewhat bitter Murlikant Petkar arrives at a police station with his son to file a formal complaint against the President of India for not awarding him the Arjuna Award

Inspector Sachin Kamble played beautifully by  Shreyas Talpade, is initially dismissive but soon becomes engrossed in Murli’s story of dramatic ups and downs. This flashback forms the core of the film’s narrative, painting a full picture of a man who never gave up.

Chandu Champion, celebrating an unprecedented victory against great adversity, faces its own share of hurdles. While it stumbles over a few, it successfully overcomes the rest.
Go watch it and you will not leave the theatres disappointed.
