Hamas Chief Ismail Haniyeh who was hiding in Iran was killed on Tuesday morning along with one of his bodyguards
He was in his home in Tehran when he was killed in a ” treacherous Zionist raid. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in a statement confirmed the attack.
This comes a day after Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian’s swear-in ceremony on Tuesday and also met Iran’s Supreme Leader.
Senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri has blamed Israel for the killing and has warned of retaliation.
Israel had vowed to kill Ismail Haniyeh after the October 7 attack that resulted in the deaths of over 1150 people, mostly civilians.
The ongoing military campaign in Gaza by the Israeli forces has resulted in the deaths of close to 39000 people, mostly civilians.
In 2017 Haniyeh was elected leader of Hamas political bureau and he took over from Khalid Meshaal. Haniyeh was known for his practical approach and he used to divide his time between Qatar and Turkiye.
